“I Had C.a.n.c.e.r but Hid It from Zoe” – Johnny Ball, 87, Hides Cancer Battle from Daughter Before Beating the Odds

Children’s TV legend Johnny Ball appeared on Good Morning Britain to share an update on his health, nearly three years after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Speaking with presenters Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, Johnny revealed he had no symptoms before a routine GP check-up uncovered the disease. “My PSA reading came back at 30, when it should have been under three,” he explained. “I had absolutely no signs, it was a complete shock.”

The 87-year-old went through three months of radiotherapy, which required small tattoos to help doctors guide the treatment. “I joined the younger generation because I was tattooed,” he joked, before clarifying that the marks were tiny micro-dots invisible to the eye.

In a candid admission, Johnny said he initially chose not to tell his daughter, BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball, about the diagnosis. “You save it for a while because sooner or later you’ve got to discuss it,” he said. “But I always knew I was going to come out the other side. Three years down the line, I’m totally through it now, and I’m so happy to talk about it.”

Johnny also used his TV appearance to encourage men over 50 to take PSA tests, stressing that early detection can save lives. “You must go and get your PSA test done. Once you’re in the system, they’ll treat you tremendously,” he urged.

The former Think of a Number host is still working and keeping busy, with his autobiography already out and a second part due next year. “It’s lovely to be here, I’m having a wonderful time,” he smiled.
