Dame Patricia Routledge, one of Britain’s most celebrated comic actresses and the unforgettable Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96.
Her agent confirmed the sad news in a statement, saying: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love. Even at 96 years old, Dame Patricia’s passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations continued to discover her through her beloved television roles.”

Patricia rose to international fame in the 1990s thanks to the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, where her portrayal of the class-obsessed Hyacinth Bucket became an enduring part of British comedy history. She later delighted viewers again as the title character in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.
But her career stretched far beyond television. Routledge made her Broadway debut in 1966 and went on to win a Tony Award in 1968 for Darling of the Day. She also delivered memorable performances in Alan Bennett’s A Woman of No Importance and Victoria Wood’s As Seen on TV.

Recognised not only for her remarkable talent but also her dedication to the craft, Patricia was honoured with an OBE in 1993, a CBE in 2004, and was made a Dame in 2017. Despite never marrying or having children, she once reflected: “I didn’t make a decision not to be married and not to be a mother. Life just turned out like that because my involvement in acting was so total.”
Her loss marks the end of an era in British entertainment. To millions, she will always remain Hyacinth Bucket—ever determined to be pronounced “Bouquet”—and a true national treasure.
