“It Was C.a.n.c.e.r”: Adrian Chiles Delivers Heartbreaking Shock as He Reveals His Diagnosis and the Agonising Weeks of Anxiety, Fear and Exhaustion Caused by NHS Silence

Adrian Chiles has revealed that he has been diagnosed with skin cancer after what began as a routine check on a strange patch of skin on his shoulder spiralled into weeks of anxiety, confusion and silence from the NHS system that was supposed to reassure him.

The 58-year-old broadcaster explained in his Guardian column that the removed patch had tested positive for squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer caused by abnormal overproduction of squamous cells in the outer layer of the skin. Adrian emphasised that doctors told him it was “nothing serious,” but the road to receiving that confirmation was anything but calm.

He recalled noticing a subtle change on his shoulder that prompted him to book an appointment with a dermatologist. The specialist removed the suspicious patch for testing — and then the real ordeal began. Adrian admitted he became increasingly worried during the long wait for news, especially as days turned into weeks without a single real update.

Twenty-three days after the removal, he received two NHS notifications about upcoming appointments, neither of which included his biopsy results. Calling automated numbers got him nowhere, and messages sent through the system went unanswered. He was eventually informed — through an app powered by Patients Know Best — that his results wouldn’t be available until December 18.

Frustrated, he wrote that the digital system “masquerades as communication, but communication is either two-way or it’s nothing,” adding that he was tempted to “flush [his] phone down the toilet” out of sheer exasperation.

Finally, after requesting a callback, Adrian was connected with a nurse who was able to tell him the actual diagnosis. The news brought a wave of relief — not only because the cancer was treatable, but because he was finally speaking to a real human being. As he put it, “The human contact feels as good as any treatment or cure.”
