First pic of ‘kind’ farmer, 73, who died outside Waterford home as family confirm funeral & son charged with assault

A “KIND” farmer who was found dead on his 150-acre property in Co Waterford will be laid to rest this weekend, his family confirmed.
John Cashman, 73, was discovered with serious injuries outside his home at Rockfield in Cappagh on Monday evening.
The grandad-of-four was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
His son, 45-year-old John Cashman Jnr, of the same address, appeared before Carrick-on-Suir District Court charged with his assault on Wednesday.
Cashman Jnr’s defence told the court that he was confronted by his father and he acted in self-defence.
John Cashman was a well-known member of the local community, previously running in the 2004 local elections as an Independent candidate in the Lismore electoral area.
A death notice online said: “John Cashman, Rockfield House, Cappagh, Co Waterford, 13th April 2026, predeceased by his parents James and Mary and sister Dolly Lannen.
“Deeply regretted by his wife Gillian, two daughters and two sons, four grandchildren, his siblings Pat, Jim, Catherine, Bill, Norie, Claire, Eileen and Margo, extended family and friends.”
John is reposing at The Kiely Funeral Home in Dungarvan from 5pm this evening, with his funeral mass taking place in St James’ Church in Ballinameela at 2pm tomorrow.
Tributes have poured in for the pensioner since his passing, with mourners describing him as a “gentleman”.
One said: “Dear John, I won’t ever forget your lovely smile and our lively discussions on farming, politics , education etc. Rest in peace now.”
Another wrote: ” John was some character. I always enjoyed working with him and ‘mother’ in Rockfield. He will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace.”
A third simply added: ” Such a nice and cheerful gentleman.”

A fourth wrote: “I knew him through he growing maize on his farm over many years. He was a kind gentleman.”
Another mourner said: “A gentleman with a cheeky smile, thank you John for the friendship, advice and encouragement you gave to both my parents down through the years. Rest in peace John.”
Fine Gael Councillor Niamh O’Donovan extended her sympathies to John’s family.
She added: “Since being elected in the area, I had the privilege of getting to know John, and it quickly became clear that he had a remarkable way with words and a presence that left a lasting impression. He will be greatly missed.”
On Wednesday, John Cashman Jnr said he had not spoken to his father in a number of years.
He insisted he would abide by all terms and conditions set out by the court.
He was remanded in custody to appear before Clonmel District Court next Tuesday.
