A distraught police officer at the scene of a fatal drowning has been pictured with his head in his hands as shocked beach-goers watched on.

A man was pulled unresponsive from Redleaf Pool in Double Bay, in Sydney‘s eastern suburbs, by members of the public about 2.30pm on Thursday.

Paramedics worked on the man under a large green tarp on the sand but despite their best efforts, he died at the scene.

A group of bikini-clad women were seen comforting each other at the water’s edge.

Locals had flocked to the popular swim spot as temperatures soared to 33C.

Some reported hearing helicopters overhead.

The enclosed harbourside pool is not patrolled by lifeguards.

Police said a crime scene had been established as an investigation was launched.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
