Denise Welch has found herself at the center of social media drama following comments she made today (June 3) on Loose Women, where she spoke emotionally about a kind gesture she once extended to the family of missing child Madeleine McCann.

With a new police search now underway in Portugal, the panel on Loose Women discussed the latest developments in the long-running case. Madeleine vanished in 2007 at just three years old, and police have recently identified a fresh area to search, reportedly linked to their main suspect, Christian Brueckner. Authorities are using ground-penetrating radar and are expected to continue operations throughout the week, including the draining of two wells.
Amidst the updates, Denise, 67, opened up about her own experience reaching out to the McCann family. Years ago, she had spoken with Madeleine’s grandmother, Susan Healy, and tried to offer a gesture of support by inviting the family – particularly Madeleine’s younger siblings Amelie and Sean – to attend her performance on Dancing On Ice in 2011.
“I knew the twins were huge fans of Dancing On Ice, and I wanted to do something kind,” Denise explained. “We’d talked about the McCanns a lot on the show, and after speaking to the grandmother before, I reached out.”
However, she received a letter back from Susan, who politely declined the offer and shared the heartbreaking reason why the family couldn’t attend.
“She wrote that while Gerry and Kate would’ve loved to bring the kids, the hatred they receive if they’re seen smiling or enjoying themselves in public is so intense that they avoid being seen at all,” Denise said.
While her story was intended to show support and compassion, some viewers didn’t take it that way.
Critics quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to accuse Denise of shifting the focus onto herself, with comments such as: “Oh of course Den making the McCann story about her,” and “Watch Denise make this all about herself!” Another viewer wrote: “Denise putting on a fake concerned voice,” while someone else simply posted: “Denise, Denise, Denise! Boring!”
Despite the backlash, not everyone was critical. Some defended her message and praised her for highlighting the unjust treatment of the McCann family. “I rarely agree with Denise, but I do on this one,” one supporter wrote.
Whether you see it as a heartfelt tribute or a controversial overshare, Denise’s comments have undeniably stirred public opinion – once again putting the sensitive case back into the spotlight.
